Why You Should Use an Ice Roller

Do you struggle with puffy skin, inflammation, or blotchy skin? Have you ever been annoyed that you can’t afford facials or expensive skincare products/tools that help reduce your skin insecurities? Me too! I struggle with acne and eczema. My face is blotchy, red, and inflamed 90% of the time. One day, I saw on Instagram someone talking about an ice roller. It sparked my curiosity and I did a lot of research and discovered there are multiple skin and health benefits to using an ice roller.

What is an Ice Roller?

An ice roller is exactly as it sounds. A handheld device that has either a gel and water attachment or stainless steel attachment that you can roll on your face. The one I personally use comes with both gel and stainless steel attachments so you have options.

You put the attachments in the freezer and use them every day as part of your skincare routine.

What are the Benefits of Using an Ice Roller?

An ice roller can do many things for your skin. You are basically bringing the benefits of a facial massage and cryotherapy into your home for a low price. Below are some of the benefits.

  • The cold activates lymphatic drainage – Lymphatic drainage activates blood flow and drains fluid, which results in reducing skin puffiness, especially around the eyes. It’s a great way to wake up your skin. You can literally feel the drainage in the mornings. I know it sounds crazy, you’ll just have to try it for yourself.
  • Reduces Inflammation – If your skin is irritated and inflamed from products, allergies, or getting a facial, the ice will help calm your skin, activate your blood cells, and speed up the healing process. It’s very soothing.
  • Helps with Headaches – If you struggle with headaches, you’ve probably heard that putting a cold compress on your head helps the pain. I apply my ice roller to my temples and my neck. It’s like a cold massage that reduces the pain.
  • Prevents wrinkles and shrinks pores –  I use a lot of skincare products so I can’t 100% say I’ve seen this benefit for myself. But from the research I’ve done wrinkle prevention is a benefit.

How to use it?

You want to make sure you are makeup free when you use the roller.

Store the roller head in the freezer. Take the roller head from the freezer and attached the head to the handle. Roll in upward motions on your face and neck for 2-3 minutes. I hold the roller on each eye for 10-15 seconds to help with puffiness. Rinse the roller and place it back in the freezer.

Some people say to use it after you’ve applied your moisturizer and serums because it helps the product soak into your skin. I prefer rolling my face first thing in the morning while my coffee is brewing. The cold wakes me up quickly and reduces my tired puffy eyes.

What’s the difference between an ice roller and a jade roller?

There are similarities between the two rollers. Both activate lymphatic drainage and increase blood flow. the ice roller reduces redness, swelling, and helps your headaches. A jade roller is known to relax the nervous system, eliminate toxins, and stimulate collagen growth.

What if I don’t have an ice roller?

You can easily use an ice cube and rub it on your face. However, it will be colder than the ice roller and it will melt. I highly recommend the ice roller, it’s mess-free and does not take up much space.
