In the pursuit of a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle, making small but impactful changes can lead to significant improvements. Transitioning to a non-toxic lifestyle is not only beneficial for your health but also contributes to a cleaner environment. In this blog post, we’ll explore 10 switches you can make to embrace a healthier, non-toxic way of living
How I Got Here
Growing up I had daily headaches, frequent migraines, and acne. I thought that was normal because I was going through puberty. Well, my acne got worse and my migraines increased. Once I was in college I started having eczema breakouts on my body. I was doing all the “things” I was told to do. Use Proactive morning and night, moisturize using dermatologist recommend lotion, and take over-the-counter medications or prescribed meds to “see if it works”. Nothing worked.
Sometime between high school and college, my mom shared that she thinks I’m allergic to one of the main ingredients in makeup, Talc. Maybe Talc was causing my severe breakouts. So I went to my local drugstore and bought a few talc-free makeup options. My acne went from severe to moderate. I was so happy I finally found my “solution”.
A few years ago I watched a documentary called Stink! on Netflix. It’s about the ingredients in our everyday products, makeup, and fragrances. It was fascinating and led me to ask myself, “What is in my home that could be causing my headaches, acne, and eczema?”. Since then I’ve made simple product swaps and am working on my living a healthier lifestyle. I can say with confidence that my acne is minimal, I don’t remember the last time I had an eczema breakout, and my headaches/migraines have decreased. I still have a long way to go but I want to share with you the 7 swaps that I’ve made to detox my home.
Why: Conventional produce is often laced with pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, disrupting our body’s natural balance. Opt for organic options to nourish your body with clean, pesticide-free goodness.
Swap: Hit up your local farmers’ market or join a CSA for fresh, organic fruits and veggies. It’s a win-win for your health and supporting local farmers!
Chemical-Free Cleaning Products
Why: Traditional cleaning products often contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful when inhaled or come into contact with the skin. Switching to chemical-free alternatives helps create a safer living environment, especially for those with allergies or respiratory sensitivities.
Swap: My favorite chemical cleaning brand is Branch Basics. It’s one concentrate that can do it all. There are different bottles for cleaners, laundry, and hand soap. Get $10 OFF. You can also grab some baking soda, vinegar, and essential oils to whip up a DIY cleaning solution. It’s budget-friendly and Earth-loving!
Natural Personal Care Products
Why: Did you know it only takes less than 30 seconds for your body to absorb whatever you put on your skin into your bloodstream? That’s insane! What we use on our skin ends up inside our bodies so it’s important to pay close attention to the ingredients in our makeup and skin care products. There are harmful ingredients that could be affecting your skin right now. I know that was the case for me before I made the switch.
Swap: Explore brands that offer organic and natural products. Look for options with simple ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and essential oils. Choose sulfate-free shampoos, paraben-free lotions, and aluminum-free deodorants.
My FAVORITE Natural skincare and makeup brand is called Crunchi, They are completely toxic-free, prioritize certified organic ingredients, and perform just as well as conventional brands. Get 10% OFF your first purchase of $50+.
Why: Tap water often contains contaminants that aren’t welcome in our hydration party. Filter it out to sip on pure, clean water that quenches without the questionable extras.
Why: Non-stick cookware may release toxic fumes at high temperatures. Choosing cookware made from safe materials like stainless steel or cast iron minimizes health risks associated with the potential inhalation of harmful substances.
Swap: Invest in stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic cookware. Brands like All-Clad, Caraway, and OurPlace offer durable and non-toxic alternatives. For a more affordable Caraway ceramic cookware set check out THIS ONE.
Why: Synthetic fabrics can trap chemicals against your skin and contribute to environmental issues. Time to rock clothes made from organic, natural fabrics for style with a purpose.
Swap: Look for brands championing organic cotton, hemp, or bamboo. It’s not just fashion; it’s a sustainable statement!
Switch to Glass or Stainless Steel Containers
Why: Plastic containers can leach harmful chemicals, especially when exposed to heat. Switching to glass or stainless steel reduces the risk of chemical transfer into your food.
Air Purifiers and Plants
Why: Indoor air quality can be compromised by pollutants emitted from furniture, paints, and electronic devices. Air-purifying plants and purifiers filter out these toxins, improving the air you breathe and enhancing your overall well-being.
Swap: Bring in plants like snake plants, spider plants, and peace lilies. These green companions not only look great but also contribute to a healthier living space. For air purifiers, look into brands like Airdoctor and Levoit.
Why: Synthetic fragrances often contain phthalates and other chemicals linked to respiratory issues and allergies. Natural fragrances provide a safer and more pleasant aromatic experience.
Swap: Explore the world of essential oils for a natural scent journey. Brands like doTERRA, Young Living, and Aura Cacia offer a wide range of pure and therapeutic-grade essential oils.
Mindful Electronic Use
Why: Prolonged exposure to electronic devices with high EMF emissions has been associated with health concerns. Being mindful of the electronics you use and taking breaks from screen time helps minimize potential risks and promotes a healthier lifestyle.
Swap: Opt for wired headphones, use airplane mode when needed, and take breaks from screen time. Your eyes and mind will thank you for the digital detox!
